Beautiful Baby is a 1978 historical fiction film directed by Louis Malle. The script was written by Polly Platt. The title was inspired by Tony Jackson’s song “Pretty Baby”, which was used on the soundtrack. Although the film was generally praised by critics, it was quite controversial at the time, especially due to scenes of naked teenage Brooke Shields.
After making a series of acclaimed and controversial films in his native France, director Louis Malle makes his American debut with the chilling but visually beautiful story of Hattie (Susan Sarandon), a turn-of-the-century prostitute who worked in the Storyville district. New Orleans When Hattie becomes pregnant, she decides to keep the child and gives birth to a daughter named Violet, raising her in the brothel where she still works. Twelve years later, Violet (Brooke Shields) is old enough to attract the attention of brothel customers, but emotionally she’s stuck with one foot in the adult world around her and the other in the naivety of childhood. With Hattie’s permission, Violet’s virginity is sold to the house’s customers; but for Violet, the chasm between childhood and adulthood becomes clearer – and more painful – when she falls in love with Bellocq (Keith Carradine), a photographer who has been working on a series of photographs of Storyville prostitutes. Violet’s mixture of childlike innocence and grown-up sensuality is extremely appealing to him, but their relationship quickly becomes troubled, especially when Hattie leaves Violet for marriage.
