VariCAD is a 3D/2D CAD software intended primarily for mechanical design. Comprehensive CAD software allows designers to quickly create, evaluate and modify their models. The software is sold as a “fully loaded” package, with all features and functions, at a very reasonable price. VariCAD offers an excellent performance-to-price ratio, making it one of the smartest choices on the market today.

User interface and system environment

VariCAD’s graphical user interface (GUI) is designed to enable fast and intuitive 3D/2D guidance. It’s carefully tailored and tuned to reflect the designer’s thought process, so ideas can be captured and delivered with a minimal number of steps. All instructions are made with ease of use in mind.

You can start by creating a 3D model and use it to automatically create a drawing file, or you can simply draw in 2D. Designs in 3D are usually more “natural” because they represent actual parts and assemblies. 3D approach is generally more intuitive than 2D drawing. Models created in 3D are easily converted to conventional 2D documentation. VariCAD provides tools for 2D updates after changing the 3D model.

VariCAD provides a library of basic 3D shapes (such as boxes, cylinders, cones, ) that can be easily modified by editing their dimensions. Solid masses can also be created by profile rotation, extrusion or lofting. More complex tools include rotating blending between two profiles, lofting between circles and rectangles or between different profiles, and creating spiral surfaces.

Solids can be added or subtracted, forming a Boolean tree that represents the actual mechanical parts. Boolean operations have automatic truncation options (so-called selective Boolean operations). Availableare also predefined operations such as drilling, face milling or slot milling. The edges can be rounded or beveled. VariCAD offers many possibilities for transforming solids or editing them. In addition, you can easily edit the logical tree – select a solid part in 3D or select it in the list view structure.

Geometric parameters and constraints

Although you can easily transform solids or their cross sections, you can optionally define geometric constraints. Once defined, constraints allow you to “fix” an object at a specific location. More specifically, you can remove degrees of freedom from a constrained object. If the other object changes or changes, the constrained object will automatically change its position. For example, if you constrain a groove to the end of a shaft and the length of the shaft changes, the groove remains a constant distance from the end edge. Constraints can be defined between solid elements, between entire solids, or within a 2D profile by creating a solid mass (for example, by extrusion).

Whenever you enter a solid dimension, constraint distance, or dimension in a 2D profile used to create a 2D solid profile, you can optionally use parameters or mathematical expressions that contain parameters. By changing the value of the parameter, you can change the shape of the solid location.

VariCAD also provides installation support tools. If a link between a part and an assembly is defined, any changes made to the part file will be reflected in the assembly file and vice versa. Copies of related solids can also be defined (called similar solids). In this case, editing the object causes all identical copies to be updated. Solid groups can also be defined, facilitating selection and visibility changes for multiple objects.

VariCAD can calculate 2D cross-sectional area, area, volume, mass, center of gravity and momentinertia. Also included are mechanical part calculations – for standard parts used every day by mechanical designers. Some useful 2D drawing features include: automatic detection of objects and anchor points, different recording modes, additional construction lines, ortho mode, rectangular grid, drawing layers, block creation, hatching with automatic edge detection, advanced scaling, finishing symbols, symbols for welding, tolerance symbol and others. You can draw in millimeters or inches.

BOM and title block

VariCAD provides tools to maintain the product data structure. There is a link between the section attribute and the content of the title block. You can easily create a bill of materials (BOM) from an assembly or modify the database using commands such as bulk attribute changes, sorting information. Each section can contain attributes such as name, material type, or supplier. This data can be used for material requisitions, bill of materials (BOM) creation, title block filling, or other purposes.

Compatibility

VariCAD can exchange files with other CAD systems. You can export STEP (3D), STL (3D), IGES (3D), DVG (2D), DXF (2D) files and import STEP (3D), DVG (2D), DXF(2D) files. Files can be converted individually or in a batch routine, converting multiple files in one step.
